How to Change the Battery on a LIFEPAK CR2 Essential Defibrillator

Keeping your LIFEPAK CR2 Essential AED rescue-ready is one of the most important responsibilities of any AED owner. One key part of this is ensuring the battery is healthy, installed correctly, and replaced before expiry. Changing the battery is simple, quick, and something anyone can do with the right guidance.

Signs Your LIFEPAK CR2 Battery Needs Replacing

Before we get into the steps, here are the common signs that your battery is due for replacement:

  • Red “X” on the status indicator
  • Low battery alert heard when the device self-tests
  • Battery expiry date approaching (printed on the battery)
  • Device not performing its self-test (no green flashing indicator)

If you see any of these signs, it’s time to replace the battery as soon as possible.

Below is an easy step-by-step guide to help you replace the CR2 battery safely and correctly.

Step-by-Step: How to Change the Battery on a LIFEPAK CR2

1. Prepare Your Device

Place your AED on a flat surface with the back facing up. Have your new, genuine LIFEPAK CR2 battery ready for installation.

2. Open the Battery Compartment

Turn the AED over and open the battery compartment located at the back of the unit.

3. Remove the Old Battery

Gently lift or slide the old battery out of the compartment.
This is also a good time to record or update:

  • AED serial number (located beneath the battery)
  • Battery expiry date

4. Insert the New Battery

Take the new battery, align it properly, and slide it into the compartment until it clicks securely into place.

5. Allow the AED to Self-Test

Once the new battery is installed, the CR2 will automatically perform a self-check.

6. Confirm the Device Is Ready

Check for the flashing green status indicator on the front of the AED.
This means your device is rescue-ready.

7. Log the Replacement

Record the:

  • Date of battery change
  • New battery expiry date
  • Your initials or staff member responsible

This helps with compliance and ensures long-term maintenance tracking.

Final Tip: Check the Pads Too

While your AED is open, quickly confirm your QUIK-STEP electrode pads are sealed and within expiry. Pads and batteries should always be ready at the same time.
